cultural mapping and community governance program
Community Arts Network WA is piloting a Cultural Mapping and Community Governance program. This is a community capacity building and skill-broadening project. Using a combination of creative facilitation, community cultural development, and community engagement techniques this program integrates cultural asset mapping and community governance principles.
This project is aimed at Aboriginal communities, associations, and corporations. Its distinction to other models is:
- It is community driven and grass roots—i.e. the targeted community chooses the project to suit the community’s interests, therefore is an innovative grass-roots approach
- Contextual—by using culture as the link to governance the project is meaningful to Aboriginal communities, rather than western practices and structures being imposed on Aboriginal communities.
Gnaala Karla Booja
Gnaala Karla Booja Working Party (GKB) is the target group for this program. GKB consist of approximately 20 people representing families that cover 30,424 square kilometres of the Southern Wheatbelt region. GKB are one of six Regional Noongar Agencies within the proposed Single Noongar Claim area. Representatives from GKB also make up the Moorditj Foundation, which is the Corporate Body that governs on behalf on the GKB area. GKB have agreed to a working partnership with CAN WA for this project. If you would like to know more about GKB or the Single Noongar Claim visit the SWALSC website.
