Cultural Planning

CAN WA’s Cultural Planning Course is a 40-hour nationally accredited module which aims to impart a comprehensive understanding of cultural development and strategic cultural planning concepts, and their application.

The Cultural Planning Course addresses the National Local Government Competency Standards LGAOVA606B ‘Develop and Maintain a Community Cultural Plan’, and LGACOM502B ‘Devise and Conduct Community Consultations’. The course covers:

  • Culture;
  • Community cultural development;
  • Creative community consultation;
  • Cultural mapping;
  • Cultural planning; and
  • Evaluation of cultural planning.

CAN WA uses a practical teaching approach that combines the theory and practice of cultural planning in an interactive, hands-on and creative way. Assessment is through group work, oral presentation and written assignment. Upon successful completion, participants are awarded with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

It was obvious from the very start that this was no “ordinary” training! The way we were asked to introduce ourselves challenged us to really think how we portray ourselves in the world. I realised fairly quickly that what I had considered my strengths could be an impediment in contributing to communities. The variety of presenters and their methods of delivery blew away many of my ideas on effective
engagement.

Participants in the Cultural Planning course can expect to be stretched beyond their current level of expertise and build skills that they will apply
in community involvement. They are informed in planning sustainable arts and heritage services. They are also enabled to form close links between groups within the community that may not have been in contact with before.

The five day course is structured to introduce the principles and methodology of cultural planning and
have participants make connections for themselves that they will carry with them into every future situation.

Thanks, CANWA, for what you have made possible through this course!
