The Waugal Wall is a brightly coloured mural at Narrogin Primary School which is inspired by the Noongar dreamtime creation story of how the waterways were created by the rainbow serpent.
Led by artists Darren Hutchens and Ross Storey, the vibrant artwork was created with the 300 students of the school. It was so well received by the school and community they’ve been invited back to paint the rest of the building!
Preparations are now under way for a new mural work which will be a virtual retelling of ancient dreamtime stories about the stars and night sky.
The CAN artists Darren and Ross have developed a contemporary design based on local landmarks and star stories. They will also be engaging the teaching staff of the school in a sundowner professional development session to facilitate creative engagement and encourage a confident skillset for teachers to create their own murals with students in the future.
Work on the mural begins this weekend and the Narrogin community will be invited to see the new work unveiled at a morning tea celebration on Mon 8 May at 8.30am.
CAN will be launching a brochure about the mural project and a short film which documents the community art journey.
