On Thursday 15 August, the upstairs Middar Room at The State Theatre Centre was abuzz with chatter as over 50 creative professionals gathered for CAN’s speed dating event.
No, it wasn’t about finding someone to take to the movies. It was all about connecting artists from across artforms who are practiced or interested in collaborating creatively with communities, with those organisations seeking artists for community based work.
With only 5 minutes for each date, it was a fast paced and noisy affair, but lots of fun and certainly without a dull moment.
Thanks to our fabulous MC Sukhjit Kahn Khalsa who had her work cut out for her convincing passionate creatives to press pause on their conversation in order to move on to the next date.
After the ten rounds of dates, everyone was ready to get up and move around the room, chatting at will (in some cases making a beeline to that particular someone) and enjoying some light refreshments.
We were pleased to welcome a high calibre of artists coming from diverse backgrounds and experiences and practicing a range of disciplines including visual arts, film, theatre, music, photography, digital art and creative production.
We were also delighted to have participation from The Art Gallery of Western Australia, Artsource, City of Joondalup, City of Stirling , FolkWorld Inc, FORM, Fremantle Arts Centre, Creative Project Management, Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, Multicultural Futures, Mundaring Arts Centre Inc., Museum of Freedom and Tolerance, Propel Youth Arts WA, The Blue Room Theatre, Warnbro Community High School and Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company
Thanks to the State Theatre Centre for supporting this event, and to all the brave artists and organisations for joining us for this afternoon of networking.
We look forward to seeing what exciting new creative collaborations come out of this event!
