History

The Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development Unit in Kellerberrin is CAN WA’s first regional office, established in 2007. Kellerberrin was selected as the site for the Unit not only because of its history as a significant meeting place for Indigenous peoples, but also because it has a strong and enduring local Indigenous culture. Kellerberrin is the home of the bi-annual Keela Dreaming Festivals which bring together storytellers, dancers, artists and writers from all around the state, making it a natural focal point for Indigenous arts in WA.

Community members have spoken in numerous forums about the positive effect CAN WA’s Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development Unit is having on the people of the region. The Unit’s role as an advocate for self-determination and vision-building within Indigenous communities has had a tangible effect on Kellerberrin’s social cohesion and optimism. CAN WA is privileged to have had such support from the community and to be involved with the passionate and empowered Indigenous people in Kellerberrin.
