Fee Plumley, Digital Program Officer, Australia Council for the Arts is visiting Perth to offer an information session on the following 2 initiatives:

The Geek in Residence pilot program

The Geek in Residence pilot program connects ‘geeks’ (by which we mean technically confident artists and creatively confident technicians) with arts organisations through a temporary subsidised* secondment scheme.

The purpose of this fund is for the Australia Council to enable digital artists and technicians to share their skills and experiences with arts workers. Geeks will be able to share their passion for solving unknown technological problems in creative situations, and arts workers will feel better equipped to work in digital spaces. Both will ultimately initiate ‘digital innovation’.

Digital Culture Fund

The Digital Culture Fund is a pilot initiative for people who have been working creatively with digital technologies for some time. They might be experienced artists already within the Australia Council's community, already supported by one of our grants or divisions. But we also want to open up to a new breed of practitioner, the digital native who might not typically consider themselves artists or ordinarily approach the Australia Council.

The purpose of this fund is for the Australia Council to support the creation of innovative digital artwork which might happen physically in front of the crowd or be experienced through a technological platform. Either way, we want it to happen live, having been created as a live collaboration, or to be experienced as a live event connecting the maker(s) and crowd(s).

GENERAL INFORMATION SESSION – ALL INVITED
WHERE: State Library Theatre
Alexander Library
Perth Cultural Centre.

WHEN: 6.30pm on the Monday 7th Dec 2009

RSVP to dsdadmin@dca.wa.gov.au

A LIMITED NUMBER OF INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS WITH FEE PLUMLEY ARE ALSO AVAILABLE, BY APPOINTMENT:

WHERE: Department of Culture and the Arts
Level 7 Law Chambers
573 Hay Street Perth WA 6000
WHEN: Tuesday 8 December 2009
Bookings are essential: dsdadmin@dca.wa.gov.au

All general queries regarding this fund should be addressed to:

Fee Plumley,

Digital Program Officer,

Australia Council for the Arts
Tel: +61 2 9215 9160
Fax: +61 2 9215 9352
f.plumley@australiacouncil.gov.au
372 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010
PO Box 788, Strawberry Hills NSW 2012
http://www.australiacouncil.gov.au

International Community Arts Gathering

by Peter Keelan

It starts out with you internally and silently humming that Paul Kelly melody in the back of your mind ...'from little things, big things grow' ... except that this melody round has been growing louder since a project I was involved with in Malawi, Africa, in 2001.

In 2008 I received a professional development grant from CAN WA to explore an idea which has been in the memory banks since that time.

This idea has focussed on producing a gathering, to provide a unique development opportunity to all Australian CCD practitioners. This pursuit has been inspired by many conversations, observations and practical experiences, over a twenty year span.

The three week professional development resulted from $4733 in funding, yet as the links and conversations started to flow, I quickly realised that this Gathering would require further research, and involvement of a larger group of people.

Indeed, at the end of writing the document below, I realised that I had only touched the surface of communication and conversation which this event requires.

What I can affirm to be conclusive is the following:

There is overwhelming national and international interest, and active support and encouragement, for an International Community Arts Gathering to be produced in Australia. The breadth of recognition that such a Gathering is long overdue has been overwhelming and inspiring.

So, where to from here?

Since acquitting the grant, I have continued to listen to a myriad of fascinating feedback from CCD people all over the world. The concept seems to have hit a positive nerve!

Now we now have a group of people forming a board and ongoing conversations being fired around the world via email. And its all emanating from the ‘bush' ... Denmark, in the southwest of WA.

I look forward to a continuing conversation, one which has already commenced, and has now filtered into the dot points in the document which follows.

If you read the document and are inspired to become a part of this unique project, I will look forward to hearing from you, especially as we start to frame the picture of where we are heading, and what the scenery might look like along the way. In the true spirit of community arts, community cultural development ... every voice will be heard and valued.

DOWNLOAD:

International Community Arts Gathering (PDF 6.7MB)

peter@peterkeelan.com.au

artpost, an interactive website and short video series for TV broadcast, which showcases artists working in regional and remote parts of the country, was launched last night.

Peter Garrett, the Federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, launched artpost at the Art at the Heart Conference, in Alice Springs.

The centrepiece of www.abc.net.au/artpost <http://www.abc.net.au/artpost/ohttp:/www.abc.net.au/artpost> , is a digital interactive arts map of Australia where you can watch artists at work in their studio - from Toowoomba to Lightning Ridge, from Broome to Strahan.

The site provides the tools for students, teachers, art lovers and artists to create short videos about who they are and their work, for inclusion on the digital map. In five easy steps, a video can be created and uploaded directly to what will become a living art gallery of all corners of Australia. These videos will also be broadcast on ABC1 and ABC2.

ABC is seeding the map by making twenty five videos to kick off the initiative and to encourage others to follow- the intention is that twenty five videos will become fifty, fifty will become five hundred and so on until the digital map is coloured in with pockets of creative communities.

Kim Dalton, Director of ABC TV said “artpost, through its online platform and its digital broadcast, can provide artists with significant national exposure, providing opportunities to reach new audiences and to expand and develop into new markets.”

artpost is a partnership between ABC and Regional Arts Australia, the national body which supports, promotes and advocates for the arts across regional Australia.

Regional Arts Australia’s president, Suzie Haslehurst, said “artpost is a groundbreaking partnership. This is an unprecedented opportunity for the rich arts landscape in regional Australia to be broadcast to the world. Artists’ stories and their work will now be there for everyone to see, either on the web or on ABC TV,” Ms Haslehurst said.

artpost has the support of the Australia Council for the Arts.
