The Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Yallingup provided a serene backdrop for CAN’s textile workshops at the Healing Spirit Day on January 26.
The annual festival brought together people of all cultural backgrounds to celebrate Noongar culture on Australia, or Survival Day.
Community Arts Network was delighted to be invited to be a part of the event. Our arts workers, Geri Hayden and Marcelle Riley, hosted basket weaving, doll making and eco-dying workshops amongst the other activities on offer at Wardan. Mitchella Hutchins and Vivian Webb hosted cultural tours throughout the day and a beautiful closing ceremony. Local environmental artist, Elaine Clocherty, facilitated the creation of an environmental artwork along the pathway leading up to Wardan’s ceremony circle.
Quairading community members, Winnie McHenry and Edna Winmar also travelled to the event to connect with senior Noongar community members from the South West. They spoke about the cultural work they have been doing in Quairading as well as getting inspired by the possibility of the a Noongar cultural centre in the Wheatbelt and building stronger connections across Noongar country.
