Moodich Yorgas Yudarn Yarns – Strong Women Tying Yarns concluded with a community celebration at the Vancouver Arts Centre during NAIDOC week 2018. The gigantic handwoven net that took two weeks to complete stole the spotlight at the launch.
As part of CAN’s Place Names program, local community members of all ages and backgrounds were invited to take part in a series of workshops to learn about weaving and increase their knowledge about Noongar Place Names, art, language and culture, through sharing stories. The workshops were led by Indigenous textile artists and local Noongar Elders on location at the Vancouver Arts Centre.
The celebration event held on Saturday 14 July, opened with a Welcome to Country followed by performances from Sisters Stand Tall and The Kaawar song shared by Averil Dean and performed by Shantay and Sheyann. The celebration took place amongst natural fibre weaving works suspended in the Main Gallery. Many individuals and community groups collaborated together to create the exhibition.
CAN’s Place Names is a five year program aimed at engaging communities across Noongar country and beyond in the Aboriginal stories, language and culture of each place. The project is an initiative based on Professor Len Collard’s long term research.
